What does Oppo think of custom vans and conversion vans? Examples dumped below. I personally like them, but I wasn’t alive “in the era.”

I had one similar to the Craigslist one except it had the extended rear end. It was awesome. Had it as my first vehicle in high school. I would buy it back if I could track it down and restore it. It was awesome. But probably one of the worst vehicles for a teenager to have. For all the reasons you would think. I had 13 people in it one night.... Yeah, probably not the best first vehicle, but awesome.

I like them. It’s like a combination of hot rod and clubhouse. Or hot rod and sex dungeon, as the case may be with many of them... unfortunately, its impossible to own a full-size van in this era without enduring endless child molester jokes.

I love how useful they are, but the fuel milage and stigma are kind of a bummer. That’s why I bought an Aerostar instead. Midsized vans (which pretty much just means Aerostars and Astros) are as useful as a full-sized van (enough interior space for 7 adults and all their luggage, 4 captains chairs, 3/4 Ton payload, 5K towing capacity, V6 engine), but unlike a full-sized van, they get better fuel milage (My Aerostar XL gets 22-ish mpg highway), and people just think they’re work vans, not rapist vans. Also, stock 4x4 is a big plus over full sized vans. Only bummer is that any F-R van is a pain to work on. Mine is in the shop right now getting a head gasket replacement, because it was too hard to do myself. And yes, I’ve done my own head gaskets before. These are just incredibly difficult to get to.

Those seats look incredibly unpleasant for any length of time. Also, a slick seat that will let you slide around while you’re driving probably isn’t the safest bet. Those look to be made of wood or fiberglass.

It’s a short show van, I think it gets driven to beaches and swap meets where the owner sells his own custom-designed clothing. It probably doesn’t see anything beyond 45 mph. Safety and comfortable are legit concerns but when you’re in a flimsy 60s van surrounded by bitches in ‘Burbans...it wouldn’t matter too much.

Vanning is very high on my list of Greatest Car-Related Things Ever.

My dad used to go vanning in his 61 Econoline. Then my uncle turned it into a mud bogger.
It’s currently in the shop being put back together so he can put a Toronado transaxle in the back, drop in some sort of V8, and make a crazy mid-engine show van out of it.
Which is basically exactly what I’ve wanted to do to it for as long as I can remember. Looking forward to seeing the thing back on the road.
TL;DR: Vans are awesome.

That’s awesome. Is it still going to be 4x4 or a normal van?

It’s gonna be a normal van again. TBH, it was kind of hard to see it chopped up and abused like that, so I’m glad it’s getting some special treatment now. My uncle’s pretty handy with body work, so I expect it to look pretty sharp once it’s finished.

Having driven a craftsman/tradesman based full size 81 plymouth voyager, shit brown on turd brown two tone with faux wood panel. Before it went all mini and was all van. I say this with confidence, they be scary to drive at times.
Going down any substantial hill is like driving a kite, brakes were vague and powerful and locked with fury, the power steer was so overpowered that you couldnt get a feel for the road and had to constantly microcorrect as even the slightest twich of your ulnar nerve would send you careening like a bloated whale into the traffic beside you. The gas mileage was terrible and it had some electrical quirks that could be quite shocking if you didn’t know about them. The horn was wired so it worked and shocked you when you pushed the button. And it stuck. It had a gutless v8 and a 3 speed. But it hauled our boat and my family on a few occasions. Fun times.

That’s a horrible first vehicle for several thousand reasons from a parent’s perspective, but a great one for those same thousand reasons for a kid.

Except BTTF is awesome and child molesters... not so much. I’m sure I’d still get very annoyed if I owned a Delorean, though.

I figured that, but no matter how many frat boys yell “1.21 GIGWATTS!” as you drive by, BTTF>chimos.

I may buy one if i become dementedly nostalgic. My dad donated it and gave me his civic for a first car. He thought i would kill myself with that van. He would probably have been right.

I like them. I’ve had an idea in my head about how I’d like to build a ‘73-’95 Chevy shorty van for like a decade.
